ECCC Co-hosts Prestigious John H. Jackson Moot Court Competition's Regional Round

Phnom Penh, March 14, 2024: The Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) took a significant step forward in fostering legal excellence and international trade law understanding by co-hosting the East Asia & Oceania Regional Round of the 22nd John H. Jackson Moot Court Competition. This landmark event, held from March 9-13, 2024, was organized in collaboration with the National University of Management (NUM iLaw), the European Law Students’ Association (ELSA), and received technical support from the World Trade Organization (WTO).

The competition saw the participation of nine teams from Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Singapore, Taiwan, and Vietnam, showcasing a remarkable level of legal acumen and debate on international trade laws. After intense rounds of competition, four teams emerged to compete in the semi-finals and finals held at the ECCC Resource Centre's courtrooms. The top two teams from the East Asia & Oceania Regional Round are set to advance to the international round at the WTO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

Tony Kranh, Acting Director of the ECCC, expressed pride in hosting the regional moot court event for the first time. He praised the students and their coaches for their dedication and competitive spirit, highlighting the ECCC's commitment to supporting educational initiatives that promote legal understanding and skills development.

Shashank Kumar, a representative from the WTO, extended heartfelt gratitude to the ECCC for the successful partnership. He remarked on the honor of participating in an event held at such an esteemed institution, lauding the significant work done by the ECCC.

Maciej Lodzinski from ELSA shared his appreciation for the opportunity to organize the competition's critical rounds at the ECCC, thanking the court for its collaboration and hospitality.

This event follows the ECCC's collaboration in mid-February 2024 with the Raoul Wallenberg Institute (RWI) and the Center for the Study of Humanitarian Law (CSHL) to co-host final rounds of a moot court competition focusing on the right to a fair trial. This series of events underscores the ECCC's role not only in addressing historical injustices but also in contributing to the development of legal practices and education.
